The Greens today welcomed repeated comments from senior Coalition frontbenchers that the Rudd Government's emissions reduction target is weak, but called on them to reveal their alternative emissions target.
Opposition Environment Spokesperson, Greg Hunt, and new Opposition Treasury Spokesperson, Joe Hockey, have both called the Rudd Government's 5% emissions reduction target 'meagre', 'weak' or 'too low' in recent days without nominating an alternative target.
"What emissions reduction target does the Opposition propose?" asked Australian Greens Deputy Leader and Climate Change Spokesperson, Senator Christine Milne.
"Playing politics with climate targets is a dangerous game. The laws of physics and chemistry brook no compromise, so targets that aren't based on science will not be credible.
"The Australian people are impressively informed and concerned about climate change. They will not be impressed by an Opposition trying on green clothing but with coal dust still all over its hands.
"The Opposition cannot get away with being critical of the Rudd Government's weak targets without proposing a stronger alternative.
"The Greens have studied the science for many years and advocate a target of reaching zero emissions as fast as feasible, and no later than 2050, with cuts of at least 40% below 1990 levels by 2020.
"The fact that the Opposition is clearly in disarray over climate change, as with so much else, is bad for Australia's democracy.
"It makes no sense that, while some key frontbenchers are calling the Government's emissions target weak, others are still bizarrely attacking one of the Government's few sensible climate policies - the roll-out of ceiling insulation across the country.
"With the Senate negotiations on emissions trading just around the corner, the Australian people deserve to know what emissions reduction target the Opposition proposes."
