The NSW Government's move to adopt a gross feed-in tariff for solar power, though it still leaves a lot to be desired, leaves Minister Wong as the key remaining barrier to a national gross feed-in tariff, the Greens said today.

While problems remain with the NSW scheme, particularly that it is limited to solar power installations smaller than 10kW and that it last only 7 years rather than best practice of 20 years, the decision to pay the tariff for all energy generated instead of only net generation is a repudiation of Minister Wong and COAG's decision last year.

"Penny Wong's refusal to admit when she is wrong is hurting the clean, green and clever renewables sector both with the renewable energy target and the feed-in tariff," Australian Greens Deputy Leader, Senator Christine Milne said.

"The Minister should swallow her pride and support my bill that would give premium tariffs for all energy generated from all renewable energy sources.

"A feed-in tariff is the best way to bring on the technologies of the future, powering Australia and creating jobs while protecting the climate.

"Minister Wong should also move immediately to fix the serious problems with the renewable energy target which are jeopardising jobs now and into the future.

"The NSW Government has a long way to go before it has a truly effective and praise-worthy policy for renewable energy, but it has at least helped by ramping up the pressure on the Rudd Government to lift their game."
