Don't let your Government put up the white flag on Climate Change!

Instead of a 5 to 15% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, Australia must start work building a zero emissions economy, with reductions of at least 40% below 1990 levels by 2020 on the way there. The best economies this century will be those based on environmental excellence.

The recognised minimum of 25% reduction by 2020 in greenhouse gas emissions has become, instead, a maximum for Rudd who is not disputing press speculation that he will set Australia's target as low as a 5-15% reduction.

Write to your Government, and make your voice heard! Tell them you don't want to see ineffective targets that will mean Australia puts up the white flag on Climate Change.

Dear Minister

I have deep concerns about Australia's targets to reduce greenhouse emissions under the proposed Emissions Trading Scheme.

A strong target can see Australia play a responsible part in the global effort to avoid catastrophic climate change. A weak target dooms Australia to continuing the climate change denial of the Howard years and will help to undermine strong global action.

If we breach tipping points in our climate, we will set in train runaway climate change that no human action can stop. We must do whatever we can to prevent that nightmare from becoming a reality.

The stakes are so high, there can be no white flag of surrender on climate change.

Any targets aiming to reduce greenhouse emissions by between 5-15% of 2000 levels by 2020 - will be nowhere near enough to avoid catastrophic climate change.

Australia must head for zero net carbon as soon as we can - and no later than 2050 - with reductions of at least 40% below 1990 levels by 2020 on the way through.

I urge you and your Government to put in place sensible, realistic targets to reduce greenhouse emissions before it is too late.

Please don't put up the white flag on Climate Change.
