Abbott's crimes against the climate

Media Release
Christine Milne 19 Sep 2013

The Australian Greens will do whatever they can to stop Greg Hunt dismantling the Climate Change Authority.

Australian Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne said said issuing instructions to axe the Climate Change Authority was totally irresponsible in the face of a global climate emergency.

"The Climate Change Authority was set up to de-politicise the process of setting greenhouse emission reduction targets," Senator Milne said.

"Everyone knows that a 5% emission reduction target is woefully inadequate.

"Shutting down the Climate Change Authority, ahead of its first report on fair and science based emission reduction targets for Australia, is cowardly and an attack on current and future generations.

"Tony Abbott is a climate criminal. Shooting the messenger does not alter the fact that Australia has to do a lot better than 5% in order to contribute fairly to the global challenge of constraining global warming to two degrees.

"In the context of global warming this action is a crime against humanity.

"Tony Abbott should also respect the law and end his heavy handed tactics in trying to undermine the work of the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC).

"It was disgraceful when in opposition, Tony Abbott wrote to the board of the CEFC and told them to act illegally and not fulfil their legislative responsibilities.

"It is completely untenable for Tony Abbott to behave this way in government. The CEFC was set up by an Act of Parliament and it is an independent statutory authority charged with investing in clean energy projects.

"The advice the Australian Greens released during the election campaign has now been backed up by further legal advice from the Australian Conservation Foundation this afternoon. It says the CEFC is obliged by law to continue investing in renewable energy until the parliament decides otherwise.

"Tony Abbott cannot bully independent statutory authorities.

"It is one thing to run around Australia and misleadingly announce that Whyalla will be wiped off the face of the map because of carbon pricing, but it is quite another to instruct a statutory authority to behave illegally.

"Tony Abbott is creating enormous uncertainty in the renewable energy sector and this has to stop.

"Having set up the CEFC as part of the Clean Energy Package to roll out large scale renewable energy projects to address the climate crisis, the Australian Greens will stand up strongly against any attempt to repeal the CEFC and will hold Tony Abbott to account for his bullying behaviour."

Black day for the climate

In response to the news that Tony Abbott has disbanded the Climate Commission and sacked Tim Flannery please find lines below from Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne:

"Today is a black day in the struggle against global warming," Senator Milne said.

"Tony Abbott has axed the Climate Change Commission and sacked its highly respected Commissioners.

"He has also moved to destroy essential infrastructure like the Climate Change Authority and the Clean Energy Finance Corporation.

"In one swoop, he has demonstrated his contempt for climate science and for the health and wellbeing of future generations.

"Prime Minister Abbott has distinguished himself as one of the only leaders of a western democracy to deny the severity of global warming and to actively undermine infrastructure which is bringing down emissions.

"Future generations will look back on this day and remember it as the day Tony Abbott condemned them and their peers to climate chaos.

"This reckless and irresponsible behaviour of Tony Abbott will now energise the community to join the Australian Greens in campaigning for effective action on global warming."
