Coalition’s High Court challenge is futile prejudice – Greens

Media Release
Christine Milne 22 Oct 2013

Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne says the Abbott government's wasteful move to strike down ACT marriage laws in the High Court will be nothing more than a futile attempt to maintain discrimination against same-sex couples contrary to the wishes of the Australian people.

"The Abbott government should remove marriage discrimination itself and save the States and Territories the effort and cost," Senator Milne said.

"The Greens will be introducing legislation yet again when the Parliament resumes and I invite the PM and Labor to get behind it.

"The Commonwealth shouldn't be wasting taxpayers money with this futile attempt to stop people who love each other getting married.

"The government's attempt to strike down ACT marriage laws is nothing more than prejudice. It is a shameful and futile attempt to maintain last century discrimination.

"Tony Abbott and George Brandis are on the wrong side of history. The wave of public support in favour of equality is unstoppable.

"Equal marriage is going to happen and a High Court challenge won't stop it.

"If Tony Abbott and George Brandis are so concerned about nationally consistent marriage laws, then they should remove discrimination from the Commonwealth Marriage Act."
