The electoral funding legislation should be dumped immediately, Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne said today.
"The community doesn't want it and neither do the Greens," she said.
"Growing concern about the legislation across the parliament, and strong opposition from the community, means this is fast becoming a quagmire and threatens other important reforms for which people have fought for nearly a decade.
"The legislation is ill considered and should be sent off to a thorough parliamentary inquiry which would report sometime in the future, but well after the election.
"Increasing public funding while putting no clamps on donations and election spending is terrible for our democracy.
"The legislation is becoming a huge political distraction and will chew up much needed parliamentary time that should be spent on passing important reforms like Gonski and action on coal seam gas."
