Government must act before possible incursion by Japanese whalers: Greens

Media Release
Christine Milne 25 Jan 2012

With reports that Japanese harpoon ship Yushin Maru No 3 is tailing anti whaling ship Bob Barker as it heads for Australia's whale sanctuary around World Heritage listed Macquarie Island, the Australian Greens are calling for the Prime Minister to immediately despatch a monitoring vessel and tell Tokyo this Japanese ship is not welcome in Australian waters.

"Following high level complaints to Tokyo about the last incursion earlier this month and the eventual departure of the Japanese harpoon vessel, the Prime Minister must despatch a patrol vessel immediately to monitor the area whilst making it clear to the Japanese Government that Australia's whale sanctuary means something and cannot be invaded at their whim," Acting Greens Leader, Senator Christine Milne said today.

"The Greens have a Bill ready to go when Parliament resumes to require a patrol vessel to be sent to monitor any whaling activity in Australia's whale sanctuary and we are looking forward to the support of Opposition Leader Tony Abbott to get this through the Parliament to ensure that the integrity of the Liberal legislated whale sanctuary is upheld.
