On behalf of the Australian Greens, Leader Christine Milne is congratulating Rosie Batty on being named the 2015 Australian of the Year.
"I'm so pleased that Rosie has been recognised in this way for her resilience and incredible determination to make Australia a safer place for people to live," said Senator Milne.
"There were no dry eyes here on the front lawns of Parliament House as Rosie dedicated her award to Luke, saying he had not died in vain.
"It has been heartbreaking and inspiring to see how Rosie has withstood such horrible events in her life and from those emerged stronger in her own recovery, and having found her voice become an advocate raising awareness of family violence.
"There is much work to do in truly acknowledging the scope of domestic violence, and weakening its insidious grip on our society," said Senator Milne.
"The Greens pledge to continue identifying ways forward and driving change from within the Federal Parliament. We, as parliamentarians, owe it to Rosie Batty and the countless others who suffer at the hands of their loved ones to promote safe domestic environments. Family violence is not okay."
