Greens launch campaign to stop Abbott getting total control

Media Release
Christine Milne 31 Aug 2013

The Australian Greens have launched a national advertising campaign to stop Tony Abbott getting total control of the parliament.

The Greens have also released details of a new opinion poll which shows 56% of Australians do not want one political party to have total control of both houses of Parliament.

"Mr Abbott wants total control of the parliament and for the Senate to wave through policies he won't even come clean on. That's where the Greens come in," Australian Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne said.

"The poll released today demonstrates most Australians don't want one party to have total control. That's because when that happens, we end up with policies like WorkChoices.

"The Greens will expose the arrogance of Mr Abbott in the Senate. The Prime Ministership is not an entitlement, and his threats to send voters back to the polls if he doesn't get the total control he wants will backfire.

"The Greens in the balance of power will not allow Mr Abbott's hidden agenda for huge budget cuts to proceed. We won't let him destroy the price on pollution or hand over environmental powers to the states. We will stand up for single parents, public servants and university students.

"The only way to stop the excesses of an Abbott government will be to have the Greens strong in the Senate. That's what this advertising campaign is about.

"A vote for the Greens is a vote for a more caring Australia that rejects the cruel and miserly politics of the two old parties."
