Immigration Minister must detail involvement with security forces amid allegations of violence

Media Release
Christine Milne 21 Oct 2013

Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne has called for Immigration Minister Scott Morrison to immediately explain the extent of the Australian Government's involvement with security forces implicated in violent interactions on Manus Island.

"This is the second time PNG security forces have been implicated in violence. Scott Morrison must immediately explain whether they are on our pay roll and the exact extent of their involvement with Australian operations at Manus Island," Senator Milne said.

"Palming off our responsibilities to Manus Island was always going to be a disaster for human rights, now the government is trying to hide the kinds of problems that we always knew were going to occur.

"The Abbott government is attempting to hide the truth about our offshore processing arrangements from the Australian people.

"Weekly briefings simply aren't good enough. Scott Morrison cannot leave answering these questions until Friday and hope that we all lose interest.

"The Greens will be moving in the Senate for the release of documents to bring the government's policy of hiding the facts to an end."
