Greens Leader Christine Milne has welcomed Australia's commitment of $5 million in aid and medical personnel for the island nation of Vanuatu in the wake of Cyclone Pam, but says regional disasters will get worse if more is not done to reduce the pollution that is causing global warming.

"Our thoughts are with the people of Vanuatu and all those impacted by the ferocity of Cyclone Pam. I know that all Australians' hearts go out to all the victims, their families and those who have lost their homes and livelihoods," Senator Milne said.

Today marks a year since the Abbott government shattered investor confidence by launching its unnecessary and ideological review of the Renewable Energy Target, and Greens Leader Christine Milne says its time for the uncertainty to end.

"The Liberals need end their attack on the Renewable Energy Target and stop destroying jobs to protect their mates at the big end of town," said Senator Milne.

The Greens-initiated Senate Inquiry into electricity prices held a public hearing in Brisbane today, gathering information to end systematic rorting of taxpayers and consumers by the electricity networks.

"Our Senate Inquiry is getting to the bottom of why Queenslanders have such astronomical electricity network charges - the highest in Australia," said Senator Christine Milne, leader of the Australian Greens, in Brisbane for the hearing today.

Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne says the UK cross party agreement to phase out coal and rapidly address global warming should be a wake up call for political parties in Australia, who have protected the big polluters' profits at the expense of everyday Australians for too long.

"What a tragedy that the Liberals, Nationals and Labor are so blinded by coal dust, they won't climb out of the coal mine," Greens Leader Christine Milne said.
