A Different World - Speech to the National Press Club

Thank you for your warm welcome. I begin by acknowledging the Ngunnawal people, the traditional owners of the land.

Gandhi once said, "The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world's problems."

We have reached a point in human history where 'what we do' on this planet imperils our survival. Now is the moment to re-imagine and reconsider 'what we are capable of doing'.

Tax Laws Amendment Bill Second Reader (Spouse Superannuation Tax Offset)

I rise today to speak on the Tax Laws Amendment (2009 Measures No. 1) Bill 2009 to make a contribution in relation to the spouse superannuation tax offset. The Greens are particularly concerned about the proposed changes to the spouse superannuation tax offset. The new definition of income will include employer superannuation payments made to low-income earners in determining the eligibility of their spouse to receive a tax offset if and when their spouse contributes to their superannuation.

Help needed for Tassie's high risk suburbs


The Greens say employment programmes under the Federal Government's stimulus package should be targeted towards suburbs in danger of high unemployment as a result of the global financial crisis.
New statistics from the University of Newcastle reveal that some 17 suburbs in Tasmania have been identified as 'at high risk' of major job loss, leading to mortgage stress and social problems.

Fair Work Bill 2008 Second Reader Speech

I rise this evening to comment on the Fair Work Bill 2008 and to express the Greens' support for getting rid of Work Choices. It was very clear at the 2007 election that the Australian community wanted an end to Work Choices because Work Choices reduced the wages and conditions of Australian employees and many more lost protections from being unfairly dismissed. The federal election was a very clear vote on Work Choices.

Greens and Liberals unite to support unique Academy of Music

The Greens and Liberals moved a joint motion in the Senate today calling on the Rudd Government to immediately reinstate 2008-09 funding for the Australian National Academy of Music, to ensure that the unique school stays open next year.

"Australia needs more highly trained professionals, and our musical star performers, who bring such stimulation and joy to our lives, are critical to our national well-being," said Australian Greens Deputy Leader and Arts Spokesperson, Senator Christine Milne.
