Protect the RET - renewables helping to cut energy prices

The Australian Greens are welcoming a report from the Clean Energy Council (CEC) that clearly makes the economic case for keeping and lifting Australia's Renewable Energy Target.

"This study supports what the Greens have been saying all along, and that is that shifting to renewable energy will help Australians save money as well as relieving pressure on our climate," said Greens Leader Christine Milne.

The CEC modelling shows by 2020, households are set to pay an average $50 less on annual energy bills, than they would if the Renewable Energy Target was weakened.

National Greenhouse Accounts bolster case to keep carbon pricing

The Australian Greens are accusing the Abbott government of selective hearing, as the new National Greenhouse Accounts out today show emissions are continuing to drop.

"The data is up on the Environment Department website but you won't hear about it from the Minister, because the figures don't fit with the Abbott government's rhetoric," said Greens Leader Christine Milne.

"Every one of these quarterly reports has seen emissions drop in areas covered by the carbon price, since it kicked in on July 1, 2012. In this latest report, energy emissions are down 5 per cent.

With a new report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change calling for a rapid and radical cut to greenhouse gas emissions, the Australian Greens say it's time for the Abbott government to get out of the way of Australia's transformation into a low-carbon economy.

"The Abbott government needs to give up the protection racket for Australia's big polluters and start protecting communities. They need to get out of the way of the positive transition that's happening and stop trying to take this country backwards," said Greens Leader Christine Milne.

"On the international stage our Prime Minister is seen as ‘flaky'," said Greens Leader Christine Milne.

"Respected British economist Lord Nicholas Stern has seen fit to say that this government's actions show it's not serious about climate change."

Abbott government must heed IPCC report and step up climate action

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has released its long-anticipated fifth report and the Australian Greens say the message is clear: no one on the planet will be unaffected by climate change and governments must act to protect their communities.

"In the face of more calls for a global response, the Abbott government wants to rip up every policy and tear down every defence that Australia has against climate change," said Greens Leader Christine Milne.

Palmer political party’s backflip on renewable energy

Greens Leader Christine Milne says Clive Palmer's backflip on supporting the Renewable Energy Target on ABC's RN Breakfast this morning shows the Palmer political party cannot be trusted and will say and do anything on a whim.

"The Palmer political party is saying whatever it thinks it needs to for electoral gain. This backflip is disgraceful and will sound the alarm not only in Western Australia but with everyone who supports renewable energy," Senator Milne said.
