Abbott will trash Australia's environmental icons

The Australian Greens said Tony Abbott's plan to devolve environment approval powers to the states so he can push through damaging developments is environmentally reckless.

"Tony Abbott is focused on destroying the environment in the fastest possible timeframe by handing over environmental powers to the states in a bid to fast track mining applications," Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne said.

Rudd confused by Australian gas market - Greens

The Australian Greens have rebuked the Prime Minister for suggesting coal seam gas could help lower electricity prices in Australia.

"Extracting more gas won't reduce its price any more than digging up more gold reduces the gold price," said Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne.

"Kevin Rudd is confused by the basics on coal seam gas in Australia. Increased production will have zero impact on electricity prices because the industry is geared up to export it out of Queensland.

Alarm at Rudd's environmental backsliding

The Australian Greens have expressed alarm that Kevin Rudd is having secret discussions with at least one Liberal Premier about Australia's environmental laws. This comes on top of apparent plans to hand big polluters billions by ending the carbon price fixed period early.

"In his Press Club address today, Kevin Rudd announced that he wanted to reduce the ‘regulatory impost' on business by changing the environmental assessment process in Australia and that he had discussed this issue with Premier Barry O'Farrell," said Australian Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne.

Greens celebrate World Heritage listing

Today's World Heritage listing of high conservation value forests on the eastern boundary of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area has been a long-time coming and will be celebrated by conservationists across the generations, Australian Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne said.

"It's fantastic that after so many years of campaigning conservationists around Tasmania, and indeed the world, can celebrate the protection of these magnificent wild forests that contain the tallest flowering plants on earth and an array of wonderful wildlife," Senator Milne said.
