Our Tarkine’s future depends on protection

"Mining the Tarkine is to Lara Giddings what damming the Franklin was to Robin Gray." Senator Christine Milne, leader of the Australian Greens said today.

"Both these premiers are so entrenched in the view that destroying places for short-term economic outcomes and minimal jobs that will fail to see that long-term protection is a far better result for Tasmania. James Price Point – too precious to lose to short term gas profits

 Leader of the Australian Greens, Senator Christine Milne and Greens spokesperson for the Kimberley, Senator Rachel Siewert, visited James Price Point yesterday. Today they will be aboard the Sea Shepherd's flagship vessel, the Steve Irwin, to see the whale nursery under threat from the Woodside gas hub development.

"This amazing place is a clear example of how fixation on short term gas profits can do huge damage to people and communities' interests into the future," Senator Christine Milne said.

Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne and Immigration spokesperson Sarah Hanson-Young held a press conference to discuss further developments in the Greens' proposals to save the lives of refugees and prevent them from taking the risky journey to Australia in dangerous boats.

The senators also addressed questions on statements in recent days by Sam Dastayari and Paul Howes.

The press conference was held outside the Australian Greens Special Policy Conference, where the party passed three proposals. The text of the proposals is below:

Minister Burke must heritage list the Tarkine: Milne

"The Tasmanian Government, in particular Minister Bryan Green, is sabotaging the Intergovernmental Agreement on Tasmania's forests by recklessly approving a mining lease over 362 hectares in the Meredith Range in the heart of the Tarkine," Australian Greens leader, Senator Christine Milne, said today.

"This is an area under active consideration for National and World Heritage listing, as part of the Intergovernmental Agreement process.
