Australian Greens launch new biosecurity authority

The Australian Greens today announced a new national independent biosecurity authority that will give greater protection against pests and diseases that are threatening Australia's agricultural sector and environment.

Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne made the announcement this morning at the 2013 Banana Industry Congress on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland.

"The increase in the global movement of people and goods, together with the onset of climate change, means Australia has to increase efforts to protect its borders from pests and diseases," Senator Milne said.

The Australian Greens and NSW farmer Penny Blatchford are calling on the old parties to support the Greens' campaign to give landholders the right to say no to coal seam gas mining on their land.

Australian Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne said Tony Abbott, Warren Truss and Julia Gillard were refusing to stand up for landholders who don't want coal seam gas mining on their land.

Queensland land clearing puts pressure on rest of economy

The gutting of Queensland’s land clearing laws could force the rest of the country to work harder to reduce carbon emissions, Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne confirmed at a Senate estimates session today.

“Campbell Newman has made it easier for land clearing to occur, which means other sectors of the economy will have to work harder to reduce emissions,” Senator Milne said.

Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke must intervene immediately to protect Aboriginal heritage at James Price Point and beyond in the wake of the Western Australian government's decision to allow the Woodside Petroleum Gas Hub to disturb Aboriginal heritage sites, the Australian Greens said today.

Greens leader Senator Christine Milne said "I'm shocked that the West Australian government is allowing such destructive acts to happen, particularly when there are two court cases pending.

"Tony Burke has to step in immediately to protect this priceless heritage."
