Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne has written to the Indonesian President urging him to reconsider his determination to apply the death penalty to Australians Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukamaran.

"I have asked President Widodo to remember his election pledge to improve respect for human rights, which gave rise to great hope in Indonesia and around the region," said Senator Milne.

"I have shared with the President my hope that his commitment to honouring human rights will extend to the matter of the death penalty.

The Australian Greens will move the following motion when Federal Parliament resumes in 2015:

(a) notes that:

(i) on 13 October 2014, the British House of Commons passed a motion to recommend the United Kingdom recognise the state of Palestine, and

(ii) the state of Palestine is currently recognised by 135 states; and

Greens Leader Christine Milne says the Abbott government's new strategy for restricting consular assistance to Australians abroad leaves too much room for interpretation and political motivation.

"Who decides what constitutes illegal or reckless behaviour? According to which country's laws? By what standards?" asked Senator Milne.

The Australian Senate has declared support for Peter Greste and freedom of the press, endorsing a motion moved by Greens Leader Christine Milne.

"Today the Senate has called on the Egyptian Government to ensure a fair, just and timely resolution to Peter Greste's appeal process," said Senator Milne.

"There have been many encouraging signs along the way that have not come to fruition but we welcome the recent news that Egyptian President al-Sisi is considering a pardon for Peter Greste.

The Australian Greens Leader, Senator Christine Milne, introduces a senate motion with the Government and Opposition calling for the Egyptian Government to ensure a fair, just and timely resolution to the appeals process for the detained Australian journalist, Peter Greste.

Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne says it is a complete deception for Tony Abbott to claim he's acting on climate change with $10 billion in the Clean Energy Finance Corporation, when he plans to abolish that very instrument, and when his government describes it as a complete waste of taxpayers' money.

"This is not a cheeky sleight of hand. This is Australia's climate denying Prime Minister telling outright lies to world leaders and international media," said Senator Milne.

China's commitment to using Australia as an Antarctic gateway is welcome news for Tasmanians working in the science, research and shipping sectors, Greens senators said today.

"The Antarctic and Southern Ocean research sector is worth millions to the Tasmanian economy. China's commitment will help ensure it continues to play a strong role for years to come," Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne said.

The Australians Greens have announced a bill to help crack down on corruption in Australian companies that operate overseas.

"Australia has a responsibility to ensure that our companies operate honestly and responsibly all over the world, but especially in our own region," Greens Leader Christine Milne said.

The Australian Greens are calling on the Chinese Government to respect the calls from tens of thousands of protestors in Hong Kong who are campaigning for democracy and universal suffrage.

"The right to peaceful protest is a hallmark of democracy, as is the right of people to nominate for election. A free vote is not truly free when there are only vetted candidates to choose from," said Greens Leader Christine Milne.

"The people of Hong Kong aspire to a healthy and prosperous future based on their commitment to democracy.
