Greens focused on delivering on progressive reform

Greens Leader Christine Milne, attending the Greens National Council meeting in Hobart this weekend, said the Greens are ready for an election but are focused on delivering a fairer school funding model, the national network of marine parks, and $50 a week to Newstart recipients, before the polling day.

"While the Prime Minister is working to keep her party together I urge Labor to focus on cementing socially and environmentally progressive reform and not tear themselves further apart." Christine Milne said.

Christine Milne and Peter Whish-Wilson commented on the Labor party and urged the Prime Minister to replace Martin Ferguson with an energy minister committed to renewable energy, and called on Tony Abbott to clarify his position on the renewable energy target. Peter Whish-Wilson also called on Federal, State and Territory governments to commit to a national container deposit scheme.

First day of parliament should be Gonski, not instability

 "Today I am calling on the Prime Minister to introduce the full Gonski school reforms when parliament resumes in May," Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne said.

"Unless the Government introduces the legislation in Budget week we risk the reforms not being bedded down before the election.

"Don't make the first day of parliament the Tony Abbott day of instability. Instead, we should be putting a smile on the faces of students, parents and teachers across the country by putting the funding schedule into Gonski legislation.

ACT has right to decide size of Legislative Assembly

The Australian Greens have secured the passage of new legislation today that will enable an increase in the size of the ACT Legislative Assembly.

The bill, which passed the House of Representatives last month and passed the Senate today, was secured as part of ongoing negotiations with the Greens.

"I'm thrilled that we have secured the right of ACT residents to decide their own future" Australian Greens leader Senator Christine Milne said.
