Greens welcome Royal Commission

The Australian Greens welcome today's announcements progressing the Royal Commission into institutional child sexual abuse.

Australian Greens Leader, Senator Christine Milne, said "I reiterate my hope that this can bring some peace to shattered lives, help bring perpetrators to justice, lift the shadow off all those good people in the church striving to do good for others, and make sure churches and other organisation can never again cover-up child abuse or allow victims to be ignored.

Semi-automatic hand guns should be banned: Greens

Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne has called on the Prime Minister to tighten Australian gun control laws following the Newtown massacre in the United States.

"The Prime Minister needs to finish the job John Howard began after Port Arthur," Senator Milne said.

Following tri-partisan cooperation led by the Greens in Tasmania, John Howard helped ban semi-automatic rifles. However semi-automatic hand guns remained.

"Hands guns like the ones reported to be carried by the shooter in Newtown, Connecticut, are available in Australia.
