The Australian Greens have unveiled plans for fixed terms with the first Saturday in Spring to become the permanent election date every 3 years.

Australian Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne said: "The Greens plan for fixed terms, with a set election date every 3 years, would end the uncertainty over election timing for good and prevent the blatant partisan abuse and manipulation of election timing.

The Australian Greens have welcomed the Prime Minister's decision to announce the federal election date.

"I am delighted the Prime Minister has ended the uncertainty by telling Australians when they will be heading to the ballot box," Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne said.

"While Kevin Rudd and Tony Abbott continue to fight each other in a race to the bottom on important issues like climate change and asylum seekers, the Greens are standing up for what matters.

"With Labor in disarray and the backroom boys removing the first female Prime Minister, the Greens continue to stand as a strong consistent and progressive voice in Australian politics ready to take on Tony Abbott," Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne said.

"While the threat of Tony Abbot taking control of parliament continues to loom, Labor has continued fighting among themselves.

"It's more important than ever to have a strong stable party you can trust to stand up for a caring Australia and to protect the environment.

Senator Christine Milne held a press conference to discuss the removal of Julia Gillard and the installing of Kevin Rudd as Prime Minister.

Only the Greens stand in the way of Tony Abbott gaining absolute power of the parliament, Australian Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne said in Canberra today.

"I'm here today with all of the Greens' lead candidates to deliver the strong message that a vote for the Greens is a vote against Tony Abbott controlling the parliament."

The Australian Greens have successfully amended Labor's whistleblower legislation to ensure that our environment will be protected.

Under the original scheme, someone raising concerns about a threat to the environment would be forced to wait for over 100 days before they could take their concerns to the media. Now they can disclose wrongdoing or regulatory failures immediately.
