Greens back international opposition to Abbott’s attacks on our environment

The Australian Greens firmly support the World Commission on Protected Areas in calling on the Abbott government to stop threatening our national parks and World Heritage Areas.

Game over for coal seam gas

The Australian Greens are calling to halt unconventional gas extraction right across the country after the contamination of groundwater from Santos' operation in north-western NSW.

"20 times the safe limit of uranium in the water there. That's a shocking finding that demonstrates the extreme danger to communities posed by coal seam gas extraction," said Greens Leader Christine Milne.

"The community has been told endlessly that there will be no contamination of aquifers, but now there is proof.

Greens to introduce bill to ban Alpine grazing

The Australian Greens have today condemned the decision to allow cattle grazing in the Alpine National Park and announced plans to reintroduce a bill to protect our national parks.

"The writing is on the wall for environment in Australia, with Tony Abbott pushing his 19th century ‘environment is for man' attitude," said Senator Christine Milne, leader of the Australian Greens.

"Given Mr Abbott thinks we have too much protected forest, this outrageous assault on the integrity of our precious national parks will be just the start.

Abbott government turns its back on Tarkine values

The Abbott government has turned its back on saving the Tassie devil with proposed changes to federal environmental law announced today, Greens Leader Christine Milne said today.

"Federal law requires the Environment Minister to consider advice about how to protect threatened plants and animals when deciding to approve projects," Senator Milne said.

"Under these changes the minister would be able to approve mines in the Tarkine, and other areas of the state, without considering a key piece of expert advice on what the devil and other threatened species need to survive.

Repeal of mining tax will make life tougher – Greens

Responding to the release of the government's draft legislation to repeal the MRRT, Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne says it will bolster billionaire miners and make life harder for ordinary Australians.

"The Greens will not support moves to put big business and mining profits ahead of people and communities," Senator Milne said.

"Letting the billionaire miners off the hook will hurt small business and some of the most vulnerable in our community like low income earners and
the unemployed.

The Australian Greens said Tony Abbott's plan to devolve environment approval powers to the states so he can push through damaging developments is environmentally reckless.

"Tony Abbott is focused on destroying the environment in the fastest possible timeframe by handing over environmental powers to the states in a bid to fast track mining applications," Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne said.

Only Greens can stop CSG rush under Abbott

The Australian Greens are the only party you can trust to stop Tony Abbott fast tracking the coal seam gas (CSG) industry if he wins the election on Saturday.

Yesterday the Coalition resources spokesman Ian Macfarlane reportedly said the domestic gas issue would be one of his top three priorities if the Coalition was elected, saying we should get the CSG industry going and it should be sorted by no later than Christmas. See the report here.
