Christine Milne wins Honourable Mention in Australian Bicycling Achievement Awards

Australian Greens Deputy Leader, Senator Christine Milne, has been awarded an Honourable Mention in the Australian Bicycling Achievement Awards in the Award for Contribution towards Cycling by a Politician.

The award recognises Senator Milne and the Greens' success in negotiating the $40 million National Bike Paths Fund during negotiations for the federal stimulus package - the largest ever direct federal investment in cycling.

Hobart Australia's 6th most sustainable city: Great opportunity to become number 1!

Hobart has a golden opportunity, with Greens in key ministerial positions, to become Australia's most sustainable city, the Australian Greens said today.

Hobart is listed as sixth most sustainable city in Australia in the Australian Conservation Foundation's ranking of Australia's 20 largest cities released today. The city performs well on air quality, ecological footprint, density and affordability, but drags its heels badly on transport, green building, water, climate change and food production.

Senator Milne calls for Tas road safety measures from budget

Australian Greens Deputy Leader, Christine Milne is calling on the Federal government to allocate funding for Tasmanian road safety measures from today's budget.

"Despite 2009 being a shocking year on our roads with 64 needless deaths, the Federal government in their last budget gave not a single cent for improving safety on our roads. That's nothing at all from a $22 billion infrastructure package.

50km/h limit is a good start, but more must be done

Hobart City Council's plan to reduce speed limits to 50km/h within its municipal boundaries should be congratulated, and it is a perfect cue for all tiers of government to step up their efforts in saving lives on our roads, says Greens Acting Leader, Christine Milne.

"This is a very positive step towards creating healthier and safer city spaces. Slowing down traffic in Hobart will no doubt slow the rate of accidents, but with 64 needless road deaths in Tasmania last year, we clearly need something more.

Peak oil plan needed to avoid default to coal

The Government and Opposition today voted against a Greens motion calling on the Government to plan for peak oil in the light of the most recent global figures showing that a shift from oil power to coal power is increasing global greenhouse emissions.

"The global financial crisis drove manufacturing from the developed world into the developing world, thereby replacing oil with coal and increasing greenhouse emissions," Australian Greens Deputy Leader, Senator Christine Milne said.
