Greens Leader Christine Milne says she will this week move for a Senate inquiry into corporate tax evasion in Australia.

"In Tony Abbott and Joe Hockey's Australia the real leaners are the big corporations. The big end of town is not paying anywhere near the amount of tax it should be paying," Senator Milne said.

"Instead Tony Abbott is trying to raise revenue from the poor, the sick and the young. This is wrong.

"If the Abbott government wants to raise revenue for its phoney budget emergency they need to crack down on corporate tax evasion.

The Abbott Government and coal-mining billionaire Clive Palmer have done a deal which will see the Palmer Party and Coalition join forces in the Senate to repeal the Mining Tax.

So what was the deal?
Repealing the Mining Tax in exchange for the Palmer Party Senators allowing the Abbott government to make a cash-grab on the retirement savings of one in three workers to the value of around $27,000 or 15% of their expected retirement savings.

Greens Leader Christine Milne says the Palmer United Party has done a mean and tricky deal with the Abbott government to turn down revenue and give a big win to mining magnates around Australia.

"Instead of getting a fair share from the big end of town that can afford to pay, coal mining billionaire Clive Palmer has done a tricky deal and put the pressure back on workers and families," said Senator Milne.

"Champagne corks will be popping in mining company boardrooms while Australian workers will face less money for their retirement.

The Australian Greens are urging those at tomorrow's Cabinet meeting to abandon Tony Abbott's brutal budget, saying no sales pitch can hide the fact that this government's obsession with propping up the fossil-fuelled past is making life harder for ordinary Australians and deterring investment and job creation.

To raise revenue, we need to end the free ride for the big end of town, instead of this Liberal Government's brutal budget cuts to our community's most vulnerable people.

Luckily for Joe Hockey and Mathias Cormann we've found over $79 billion dollars in revenue, over four years. We need to end the free ride for big business, big mining, and the big four banks.

Why are the Greens blocking the fuel tax increase?

While we support a stronger price signal on fuel use, this proposal binds all of the funds raised to road expenditure.

Wouldn't a price increase on petrol cut down on fuel use?

Only if the funds were used to provide alternatives! With this proposal Tony Abbott want to make using the road more expensive but only use the funds raised to make more roads.
