Jobs saved in film industry but jobs on the line at cultural institutions

The increase and expansion of tax offsets for film production will save jobs and infrastructure in the film and television industry but jobs will go at cultural institutions unless they are exempted from the efficiency dividend, the Australian Greens said today.

"For the arts, this budget seems to be 'a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down'," Australian Greens Deputy Leader, Senator Christine Milne, said.

Film production tax offsets drive huge investment in Australian culture

A proposed increase in film production tax offsets would bring tremendous benefits to the economy and support Australian culture if included in tomorrow's budget, the Australian Greens said today.

The Greens have long been supportive of calls from the film industry to increase the Location and Post, Digital and Visual Effects (PDV) tax offsets from 15% of qualifying production spend to 30% in order to once again compete to attract global investment.

Dame Joan Sutherland an inspiration

The Australian Greens today paid tribute to Dame Joan Sutherland, one of the great artists of the 20th century, who died overnight.

"Australians are rightly proud of the legacy of Dame Joan Sutherland, one of the great artistic talents of the 20th century," Australian Greens Deputy Leader, Senator Christine Milne, said.

"Dame Joan inspired a generation of Australians - both musicians and music-lovers - and we will always be in her debt.

"Our thoughts are with Dame Joan's family in their loss, but also in celebrating a long and successful life and career."
