PM Abbott's protection racket can't save dirty coal

China's new coal import rules make it clear Australia is becoming a rust-bucket economy under the Abbott government, said Greens Leader Christine Milne.

"There's China moving to cut pollution while in Australia we have a policy vacuum and a Prime Minister who wants our economy to be reliant on exporting coal pollution to the world," said Senator Milne.

"Tony Abbott is putting his hands over his ears and refusing to hear the loud message that investing in coal, and building coal ports and railways, will lead to stranded assets and is jeopardising our future prosperity.

Greens say RET report is climate denier drivel

The Australian Greens say it's no surprise that a review led by a climate sceptic has trashed the Renewable Energy Target, saying both options the report presents will destroy renewable energy in Australia.

"I'm glad this dangerous and ignorant report is finally public, so everyone can see it for the climate denier drivel it is. The outcome was determined long ago," said Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne.

"It's now time to give the industry certainty by retaining and expanding the Renewable Energy Target.

"Companies are now free to pollute in Tony Abbott's Australia, but not for long. The resurgence in support for pricing pollution and genuine action on global warming begins now," said Greens Leader Christine Milne.

The Australian Greens say the repeal of the price on pollution will be remembered as a monumental blunder in an era of dangerous climate change and a massive blow to Australian innovation, jobs and families. The Greens will now lead a campaign to restore genuine action on global warming.

"This is a tragic day for Australia and the planet but the Greens will lead the campaign to make the big polluters pay for global warming," Greens Leader Christine Milne said.

Palmer amendments will not deliver

Questioning by the Australian Greens during Senate debate today has confirmed the Abbott government cannot guarantee families will be financially better off without a price on pollution.

"Not only will households have to deal with global warming, but the $550 they now think they're getting? Forget it. It's a mirage," said Greens Leader Christine Milne.

"In the Senate today, Finance Minister Cormann couldn't answer even the most basic questions about what the legislation will do. Either he doesn't know or he doesn't care.
