Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne says international pressure is mounting on the Abbott government ahead of UN climate talks in Paris.

"It's no surprise that the rest of the world is appalled by the Abbott government's refusal to adopt meaningful global warming policy," said Senator Milne.

"Australia may stand alone and humiliated, but even worse is that Tony Abbott's global warming policy protects the profits of the big polluters now at the expense of a safe climate for our children and grandchildren.

"It is intergenerational theft on an obscene scale."

The Australian Greens say coal miner Clive Palmer has helped our climate denier Prime Minister to demolish emissions trading in favour of a complete sham that benefits coal miners and polluters.

"Coal miner Clive Palmer has worked with the climate denier Abbott government to deliver a huge win for coal miners and big polluters," Greens Leader Christine Milne said.

"The dodgy and misnamed Direct Action policy will not reduce pollution. It has absolutely no substance at all.

New figures released today will deepen Australia's embarrassment at the UN Climate Summit, confirming the Abbott government has proudly dismantled a policy that was working to bring down pollution.

The latest Greenhouse Gas Inventory report shows nationwide emissions fell 1.1 per cent in the year to March 2014, smashing the previous record of -0.8 per cent, set in the year to December 2013.

"Under the carbon price that Tony Abbott repealed, Australia's emissions were falling faster and faster," says Greens Leader Christine Milne.

The Australian Greens have called on the Palmer United Political Party to clarify their position on upcoming votes on the clean energy package and the Abbott Government's Direct Action proposal.

"Clive Palmer must not flip-flop on this. We need real action on climate change, not the joke that is the Abbott government's plan," said Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne.

"Direct Action means no action to stop the impacts of global warming on our communities and our environment, no-one voted for that.

New detail about the Abbott government's Direct Action plan has strengthened the Australian Greens' resolve to protect communities from the fiscal and environmental damage it would inflict.

"Direct Action is a misnomer that's so drastically inferior to our existing policies that it's incredible the Abbott government would even try to push ahead with it," said Greens Acting Leader, Adam Bandt MP.

A Senate inquiry has rejected Tony Abbott's do-nothing global warming policy as a scheme that pays polluters to continue as usual with ordinary Australians footing the bill.

"Tony Abbott wants families and workers to pay the price for the impacts of global warming instead of the big polluters," Greens Leader Christine Milne said.

"The inquiry has made it crystal clear that Direct Action is not a viable replacement for carbon pricing and is vastly inferior to the existing law.

The Senate has voted to maintain the existing emissions trading scheme 29 - 33.

"The Senate has rejected Tony Abbott's do-nothing approach on global warming and voted to maintain the price on pollution," Greens Leader Christine Milne said.

"No one should give up on the current law. It has the support of leading economists like Ken Henry, Ross Garnaut and Bernie Fraser whilst Tony Abbott's phoney alternative is friendless.

The Greens-initiated Direct Action inquiry has today heard witness after witness state that the plan is doomed to fail.

"What we've been told today is that the Abbott government's plan is not ‘investment grade,'" said Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne, who questioned witnesses at today's hearing.

"There are billions of dollars sitting on the sidelines, waiting to be invested in clean energy, but these investors and financial analysts have told us they will not engage with Direct Action, because there is no policy certainty and no longevity.
