New figures show China imported 42 per cent less coal in the first quarter of 2015 compared with the same period last year, with analysts saying it's a signal demand for Australian coal will continue to fall.

"We need to leave it in the ground, simple as that," said Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne.

"Tony Abbott has got to stop propping up this polluting industry that is falling down around his ears.

Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne has thrown her support behind the Tasmanian Government’s investigation of a new data cable for the state and called on the federal government to help out if needed.

“This is one of those cases of ‘if you build it they will come’,” Senator Milne said.

“A fourth data cable connecting us to the world could bring costs down and attract more ICT business to the state.

Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne says the government's Energy White Paper needs to be binned along with the Warburton review into the RET, as both have been written to protect the profits of the Coalition's mates in the fossil fuel sector.

"This Energy White Paper is nothing more than a pamphlet by the wholly-owned subsidiary of the coal industry that is the Abbott government," said Senator Milne.

Greens Leader Christine Milne says it's no surprise that Australian officials have been instructed to try to protect fossil fuel subsidies at the OECD.

"The Abbott government is a wholly owned subsidiary of the coal industry. There's no other way of looking at it," said Senator Milne.

"Anyone who was unsure if the government's attack on the Renewable Energy Target was anything other than attempt to prop up coal would now be in no doubt.

Greens Leader Christine Milne says now is no time to settle on a lower Renewable Energy Target, which would lock in lower investment, fewer jobs, and a smaller cut to carbon pollution.

"If the government wants to fix uncertainty in the renewable energy industry, they can do it today. All it takes is for Mr Abbott to back off his cut to the RET, the way he's backed down on Medicare and university fees," said Senator Milne.

Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne says the government's global warming denial is on full display today, as new figures show pollution has increased since the repeal of the carbon price.

"The depth of this government's denial is alarming. They're condemning Australia to economic dislocation, to being way behind the rest of the word, and to making life harder and more dangerous for everyone in our region, as extreme fires and storms intensify," said Senator Milne.

The Greens are calling on Labor to reject the Abbott government's ‘offer' to cut the Renewable Energy Target.

"This is just like the government's cuts to Medicare and universities. Attacking clean energy is bad policy that will cost Australians, immediately and for generations to come," said Greens Leader Christine Milne.

"Labor must not shake on a bad deal that will destroy renewable energy, destroy jobs, drive power bills up, and keep Australia reliant on dirty power.

Today marks a year since the Abbott government shattered investor confidence by launching its unnecessary and ideological review of the Renewable Energy Target, and Greens Leader Christine Milne says its time for the uncertainty to end.

"The Liberals need end their attack on the Renewable Energy Target and stop destroying jobs to protect their mates at the big end of town," said Senator Milne.

Senator Ricky Muir has this afternoon said in the Senate he will support exemptions for heavy industry and the inclusion of electricity generation from burning native forests within the Renewable Energy Target.

"Exemptions for heavy industry and inclusion of energy generated from burning native forests in the Renewable Energy Target would be a disaster. It would do even more to destroy confidence in Australian clean energy," Greens Leader Christine Milne said.

Responding to the decision by Keppel Prince to mothball its entire wind turbine division and lay off 100 workers, Greens Leader Christine Milne says the Abbott government has taken a wrecking ball to the industry that holds the best hope of providing future jobs and investment in Australia.

"The Abbott government is destroying jobs now and Australia's best hope of future investment beyond the mining boom in order to protect its billionaire mates in the coal industry," Greens Leader Christine Milne said.
